Berlin is an exciting place to study for many students, but the biggest difficulty is certainly finding a place to live as the city has a housing shortage. The search for accommodation often involves a lot of effort, and sadly, frustration.

Humboldt-Universität zu Berlin does not have its own student dormitories. They offer a limited number of rooms for international program students in two Berlin student dormitories, which students can apply for,  accommodation for all students cannot be guaranteed as the demand usually exceeds what is available. Students who cannot be offered a room have to look for accommodation on their own.
 
The host university advises that: 
  • the housing situation in Berlin is very difficult and can cause a lot of stress for international students and that although they try to support students in the best possible way, they can unfortunately only provide advice to students looking for accommodation.
  • in the private housing market, most rooms and apartments can be found a month in advance. However, the start of the semester is always a very busy time, so applicants are advised to be patient and not be surprised if they need to find short-term accommodation in the first few weeks of your stay. 
  • it is often easier to find an apartment or a room if you’re already in Berlin. 
  • you should anticipate a monthly rent of 600 euros for a room and 1000 euros for a one-room apartment.
