How much it will cost to go on exchange to CityUHK?

You will need to consider establishment costs, which may include buying furniture, paying a rental bond, and setting up electricity, gas and mobile phone accounts. Other expenses, such as visa and medical fees (see ‘Health insurance’, below), as well as return airfares, should also be considered. Students are advised to research the cost of living in Hong Kong, and remember that exchange rate variations may also affect your budget.

CityUHK has provided the following cost of living estimates for one semester, in Hong Kong dollars:

  • Accommodation:
    • University-managed accommodation: HKD 11,900 for a double room, HKD 23,800 for a single room
    • Off-campus accommodation: ~HKD 25,000 to HKD 30,000 for a shared private flat or serviced apartment (not including utilities and bills)
  • Living costs: ~HKD 25,00 for meals, transport, laundry, and education expenses for books, stationery, etc.

These figures are estimates.  The cost of living will vary depending on your lifestyle.

Visa considerations

You should expect to pay a processing fee to obtain your study visa for Hong Kong.  Visa requirements can vary depending on your nationality.  Applicants will be required to provide financial proof, to demonstrate that they can meet the cost of living in Hong Kong.

Health insurance

It is mandatory for exchange students to have insurance. Students must purchase insurance for themselves before they come to Hong Kong. The insurance should include, but not limited to, medical and travel insurance that will cover the entire period of their study in Hong Kong. If exchange students wish to have additional insurance coverage, they may enrol in the insurance plan for non-local students at CityUHK.  More information about CityUHK's policy is available at the link below:
